Gender Selection & Family Balancing

Have you always dreamt of having a little girl or boy? Well, new technology is now allowing couples to choose the gender of their baby before pregnancy. There are many products and techniques on the internet offering gender selction however only one technique is nearly 100% accurate and that is Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis known as PGD.

Why baby gender selection

There are 3 main reasons for choosing baby gender selection.

  • Genetic Disease: Some couples are afraid of passing certain genetic diseases on to their children. There are genetic disorders associated with male children, such as hemophilia and muscular dystrophy. In order to avoid having a child with these disorders, some parents choose to have a female child.
  • Family Balancing: Couples who have already had one child often would like to have another child of the opposite sex, in order to balance their family.
  • Death of a Child: Unfortunately, some parents lose their children at a very young age. Gender selection provides these couples with the chance of having another child of the same sex.

 How is it performed

  • Several eggs are extracted from the mother by our doctors, sperm is supplied by the father.
  • The father's sperm is used to fertilize the mother's eggs in our lab.
  • After 3 days, several 8-cell embryos will have developed.
  • Our doctor-scientist specialists examine the genetic makeup of the embryos, screening for both genetic diseases and desired gender. Our scientists can use a number of different methods to analyse the biopsied cells. Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) is used to count the number of certain chromosomes and to observe how they are arranged. FISH is also used to identify the sex of an embryo, as it can determine if there are two X chromosomes or an X and a Y chromosome. If the problem is at gene level rather than chromosome it is more common to use PCR. PCR makes millions of copies of a part of the DNA code, which allows us to see whether this part of the DNA in the sample is normal or mutant.
  • Healthy embryos of the gender you desire are implanted in the mother.
  • Any additional healthy embryos may be cryo-frozen for future use.
  • Gestation and birth take place as normal.

If you want to be certain your next child will be the gender you're hoping for, be aware that no other method comes close to the reliability of PGD. While traditional sperm-screening techniques have a success rates of 60-70%, only PGD offers virtually 100% accuracy.

What is the cost of gender selection

The approximate cost of gender selection starts from $7,000 - $10,000 which includes egg collection, IVF and embryo transfer.
