The Liposuction Procedure
- Anaesthesia: Choices include intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.
- Incision: Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions. First, sterile liquid solution is infused to reduce bleeding and trauma. Then a thin hollow tube, or cannula, is inserted through these incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out of the body.
- See the results: Your improved body contour will be apparent when the swelling and fluid retention commonly experienced following liposuction subside.
Recovery Time
Depending on the areas treated and the extent of liposuction, back to workk within 3 to 21 days and resumption of strenuous activity in 3 - 8 weeks.
Risks
Infection, fat or blood clots, excessive fluid loss, friction burns, nerve damage, adverse reaction to the anaesthetic and epiniphrine used in tumescence, numbeness, asymmetry, contour irregularities or dimpling, pigmentation changes, sagging skin, irregular scar formation and complications related to anaesthesia in some rare cases.
Longevity of Results
Noticeable improvement in the first few days through four weeks, but continued improvement for six months post-surgery as swelling decreases. Results must be maintained with proper diet and exercise.
