A Face Lift involves redistribution and/or reduction of facial fat, repositioning and tightening of facial muscles and tissue. Re-draping and reduction of excess sagging skin of the face, jowls and neck produce a more youthful appearance. Face Lift is not a mere skin operation. It is a scientifically worked out operation to restore the vectors of the skin, underlying muscles and their attachments to the bone.
Approximately 3-6 hours
General or local with intravenous sedation
Generally about 10 years however the effects of ageing and gravity will continue to take their toll and you may desire another surgery in the future
Nerve damage, hematoma (collection of blood under the skin), asymmetry, irregular scar formation, altered hairline and complications related to anaesthesia in some rare cases
The type of anesthesia used for a Face Lift will be determined by the desire of the patient and the judgment of the doctor. The incisions are usually placed starting at the hairline in the temporal area, then extending downward in front of the ear. The incision is then extended behind the ear. The doctor then separates the skin and fat from the underlying muscle. He then tightens the underlying muscle and membrane, pulls the skin back and removes the excess. Sometimes accumulations of fat are aspirated from under the chin area to create a smooth contour. The incisions are then sutured. The head is then covered with dressings and a compression band.
After Face Lift surgery, there may be some mild discomfort. This can be controlled by pain medication if needed. Swelling, bruising and skin discoloration are to be expected. This will usually subside within a couple of weeks. After the sutures are removed, any discoloration which remains can be camouflaged by the use of make-up. Some patients may be asked to wear a support garment when they sleep for 3-4 weeks. Couple of days following surgery, the doctor will remove the bandages so that he can assess healing. The patient returns about 5-6 days later. At this time some or all of the sutures are removed. Swelling, bruising and stiffness may persist for three to four weeks
