Description
Removal of fat, glandular tissue and skin to make breasts smaller, lighter and firmer

Duration of Surgery
Approximately 2-4 hours

The Breast Reduction Procedure

  1. Anaesthesia: Usually a general anaesthic.
  2. Incision: There are several types of incision possible for Breast Reduction surgery.
  3. Removing tissue and repositioning: Underlying breast tissue is reduced, lifted and shaped. Occasionally, for extremely large pendulous breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and transplanted to a higher position on the breast.
  4. Closing the incisions: The incisions are brought together to reshape the now smaller breast. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases will fade and significantly improve over time.
  5. See the results: The results of your breast reduction surgery are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve and incision lines will fade. Satisfaction with your new image should continue to grow as you recover.

Recovery Time
Minimum stay: 12 days  Doctor preferred stay: 15 days
Return to work in two weeks. Strenuous activity in four to six weeks

Risks
Bleeding, infection, asymmetry, irregular scar formation, permanent loss of sensation in breasts and/or nipples, loss of tissue and complications related to anesthesia, in some rare cases. Breast feeding may not be possible.

Longevity of Results
Permanent, but weight gain or loss and aging can affect the results.
